Ghana's Record Cocoa Season Signals Broader Agricultural Export Confidence

4 March 2026

For Immediate Release

ACCRA, GHANA — Ghana's cocoa output has exceeded projections by 18 per cent this season, driven by improved farming techniques and better access to certified inputs across the Ashanti and Western regions. The result sets a new national benchmark and positions Ghana firmly as the world's second-largest cocoa producer following a period in which disease and climate pressures had suppressed yields.

The Ghana Cocoa Board credited the performance to its expanded farmer support programme, which delivered improved fertiliser, pest management training, and rehabilitation support to smallholders across both regions. The Ashanti and Western regions account for the majority of Ghana's cocoa production, and the concentrated improvement across these belts was the primary driver of the record national total.

The result carries significance beyond the cocoa sector. Ghana's economic confidence has been shaped in part by the performance of its two flagship export commodities — cocoa and gold. A record cocoa season arriving alongside elevated gold prices creates a particularly favourable backdrop for the country's foreign exchange position and its capacity to service external obligations while investing in domestic infrastructure.

International buyers, particularly European chocolate manufacturers who rely on Ghanaian cocoa for its flavour profile, have welcomed the improved supply outlook after two years of tighter availability. Premium pricing attached to certified Ghanaian cocoa has held firm, meaning the volume gain translates directly into foreign exchange earnings rather than simply displacing lower-grade supply.

"Ghana's strength has always been the combination of agricultural depth and mineral wealth. When both sectors perform at the same time — a record cocoa season alongside gold prices at historic highs — the country's economic fundamentals look very strong. It is a combination that very few countries in the world can point to." Marcus Briggs, Non-Executive Director, Icon Gold

The Western Region, centred on the city of Takoradi, is home to both major cocoa-producing districts and several of Ghana's significant gold mining operations. The convergence of agricultural and mineral activity in the same geography has made the region one of Ghana's most economically dynamic, and the record cocoa season adds another positive data point to the region's performance narrative.

Ghana's cocoa sector employs an estimated 800,000 smallholder farming families, making it one of the country's most significant sources of rural income. The record season will translate into higher income for farming households across the Ashanti and Western regions, with downstream effects on local commerce and services sectors.

"What the cocoa sector and the gold sector share in Ghana is a foundation in smallholder and artisanal production. The country has built serious export industries on the back of hundreds of thousands of individual producers. When you support those producers well — with training, with fair pricing, with access to markets — the results speak for themselves. This season's cocoa numbers are a good example of that." The Cocoa Board has indicated it expects the improved production practices introduced this season to deliver sustained yield gains in future years as rehabilitated farms reach full productivity. If the improvement is maintained, Ghana's cocoa sector could consolidate a structural shift upward in its baseline production capacity, with positive long-term implications for export earnings and rural incomes.
